HIGH COUNTRY RAIL TRAIL

SPARKLING LAKE HUME AND HIGH COUNTRY HISTORY

Due to extensive fire damage the Old Tallangatta to Shelley Station section of the trail is closed to the public. Progress continues on safety assessments and other works required to reopen this section.

Leave the crowds behind and soak in iconic landscapes, railway history and country town charm.

Stretching 78km from Wodonga through to Tallangatta and Shelley, plus an extension between Corryong and Colac Colac, the High Country Rail Trail hugs the shoreline of Lake Hume and frosty countryside. BYO bike, layer up, and experience history-filled towns and all-to-yourself winter nature.

SANDY CREEK BRIDGE

A signature landmark of the High Country Rail Trail, the striking 600m Sandy Creek Bridge spans the width of spectacular Lake Hume and is a great 10km family pedal from Tallangatta .

Stop at the viewing platform for breathtaking panoramic views and birdwatching before pedalling to Tallangatta or Wodonga through pretty countryside.

OLD TALLANGATTA

Ride back in time to the site of Old Tallangatta and learn about the town flooding and relocation to make way for Lake Hume in the 1950s. Pack a picnic and ride 8km to the charming Old Tallangatta Lookout for cracking views over Lake Hume. This is a great short family ride or convenient stop along the rail trail when on longer adventures with information boards, picnic tables and limited parking available.

Keep pedalling to the nearby Mitta Bridge for water views and a smooth bitumen surface.

Towns and villages of the trail

With pubs, cafés and bakeries, peaceful Corryong is a great base for relaxed family rail trail pedals.

Base yourself in Tallangatta at the Gatta Inn or set-up the caravan or tent next to Lake Hume at the Lakelands Caravan Park . Looking to treat yourself? Stay close-by in Bethanga at Switchback Stays for a luxe cycle-friendly base.
