Officially opened in 1851, the cemetery provides a fascinating insight into the early settlement of the region and the lives of those who shaped it.
Among its most moving features is the Vault of the Unknown Children, marked only by the inscription "Our Little Earnest and Poor Anthony." With no burial records available prior to 1862, the identity of these children remains a mystery, adding an element of quiet intrigue to the site.
The cemetery is also the resting place of notable early settler George Faithfull, who established himself at Oxley Plains and named his homestead Wangaratta. A respected figure in the emerging township, Faithfull contributed to the development of the region before his death in 1855.
Adding to the site's layered history are stories connected to the infamous bushranger, Mad Dog Morgan, whose death sparked controversy over the handling of his remains.
